NZ Fonterra confirms E coli cream contamination - Stuff

FXstreet.com (Bali) - According to a story carried by Stuff news-agency, Fonterra, world's largest dairy exporter, has confirmed that a batch of over 9000 fresh cream supplied to Anchor and Pams were exposed to contamination with E coli, although it is not known how many were actually affected, Stuff says.

Since the incident appears to only involve domestic activity and no international exports, the magnitude of the problem should be minimal. However, should any exported-product be affected, it would certainly be a negative piece of news for the NZ Dollar. Back in August 2013, the New Zealand Dollar saw an impetuous sell-off after news emerged Fonterra had found a contaminated ingredient on milk products, which led to immediate bans in varies international markets.

From Stuff

The dairy giant last night announced a voluntary recall of 300 millilitre and 500ml bottles of Anchor and Pams fresh cream with a best-before date of January 21, 2014, distributed in the North Island from Northland to Turangi, including Gisborne.

Fonterra said today the cream had tested positive for E coli but the company was yet to determine how the contamination happened.

Fonterra Brands managing director Peter McClure told Radio NZ the E coli was "very unlikely" to have come in with the milk from the farms and it was "almost impossible" that the contamination could have been deliberate.

However, he said he did not want to speculate further on how the contamination happened.

McClure said E coli contaminations were "very rare" and this was the first time in at least 18 years that a Fonterra product had tested positive for the bacteria.

Fonterra said it would not know how many bottles of cream had been returned until next week.
