Flash: Portfolio outflows from Emerging Asia intensified - ANZ

FXstreet.com (Bali) - According to Richard Yetsenga, Head of Global Markets Research at ANZ, Portfolio outflows from Emerging Asia intensified in the week ending Jan 22.

Key Quotes

"Based on EPFR data, a total of USD1.4bn flowed out of equity and bond funds from the region, marking the 8th consecutive week of outflows. Vietnam was the only country in Emerging Asia to see inflows."

"While emerging markets as a whole continue to see outflows, developed markets are seeing inflows, even into their bond markets. For the week, EM equity funds saw outflows equivalent to 0.22% of AUM, while DM equities received inflows equivalent to 0.15% of AUM."

"The political situation in Thailand is no doubt adding to the outflow from its bond and equity markets. Outflows equivalent to 0.65% of AUM in bonds and 0.33% in equities were recorded this week, weighing on the Thai baht."

"With sentiment towards emerging market assets still poor, we can expect further outflows to come, putting downward pressure on EM currencies."
