Ireland's leaders in talks to avoid snap election - BBC

The pressure on Deputy Prime Minister Frances Fitzgerald of Varadkar’s Fine Gael party mounted on Monday following the release of fresh documents about mishandling of a police whistleblower who alleged corruption in the force. The opposition party says the deputy prime minister’s refusal to quit could push the country to the polls next month. 

However, reports are doing the rounds that efforts are being taken to avoid the political crisis. A BBC report released today says, "the leaders of Ireland's two main political parties will hold crisis talks on Tuesday in an attempt to avoid a snap general election." 

There are fears that snap elections could weaken Ireland's position while heading into next month's EU meeting.
