A quiet Asian Friday looks to the West – WIB

FXStreet (Guatemala) - Sean Callow, analyst at Westpac Banking Corporation ABN noted that it could be a quiet Friday.

Key Quotes:

“Japanese markets are closed for a holiday while the AU/NZ and Asian calendars lack notable releases”.

“We should see some headlines from Europe though, with EU leaders still in a long dinner in Brussels to discuss new sanctions on Russia. These “phase 2” sanctions should remain focused on individuals but the EC should be tasked with investigating the much stronger “phase 3” sanctions in terms of economic impact on EU members if agreed. The idea seems to be to share the pain. Research will also be commissioned into long term reduction in the share of EU gas and oil imports from Russia”.

“The US data calendar is quiet but we will hear a lot from Fed officials, with mixed messages likely. Centrist/wildcard Bullard is listed to speak, along with hawk Fisher, centrist governor Stein and dove Kocherlakota, who should elaborate on his solo dissent this week”.

Resilient AUD despite negative inputs

If there is one currency holding extraordinarily well the stampede of USD positive flows since Yellen's hawkish bombshell on Wednesday, that is the Aussie, closing flat for the day at 0.9040.
