Ifo employment barometer edges downwards in September

The Ifo Employment Barometer dipped slightly to 104.6 points in October from 104.8 points in September, but German companies are continuing to recruit new staff. Contractors, in particular, are seeking to hire additional workers.

In construction the employment barometer climbed to a new record high, marking its sharpest increase since February 2006. Many contractors, however, are still struggling to find suitably-qualified workers. Manufacturing is also suffering from a labor shortage, according to one in four of the manufacturers surveyed. One in five companies in the service sector is suffering from the same problem. The employment barometer dropped in manufacturing, the service sector, and trade, but firms in these sectors are still seeking new staff.
